1. Where to Stay on the Amalfi Coast: Positano

On top of that, the beaches are right there, so you can just kick back on the sand and soak in that perfect view of the blue sea.
What’s even better, Positano is also a great spot to explore nearby towns like Amalfi and Ravello.
Drawbacks:
- It can be pretty pricey, especially in the high season.
- It gets packed with tourists, especially in the summer.
- The streets are narrow, and there are a lot of hills, so be ready for a little workout!

2. Amalfi
Amalfi really won me over with its historic vibe and central location. It’s an ideal base for exploring the whole coast!
Why stay in Amalfi?
First, Amalfi’s location is awesome – it’s super convenient for visiting other spots like Positano, Ravello, or Atrani.
What’s more, the city has so much history, and the Cathedral of St. Andrew is absolutely stunning – definitely worth seeing.
Another plus is that Amalfi is well–connected to the rest of the coast, so getting to other towns is easy.
And you can find places to stay for every budget – from fancy hotels to more affordable options, so it’s great for any kind of trip.
Downsides:
- It gets really crowded during peak season.
- Prices can be pretty high, especially in the center.
- The beaches are small, so there’s not much space to spread out and relax.

Hotel Santa Caterina

3. Where to Stay on the Amalfi Coast: Ravello
Ravello was such a gem on my trip!
It’s perched high above the sea and has the most amazing views and a peaceful vibe that you won’t find in the busier touristy spots.

Why stay in Ravello?
First off, the views are incredible. Since it’s up high, the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone give you these stunning, postcard-like panoramas.
What’s more, it’s also perfect for anyone looking for a chill, quiet vibe. Unlike the crowded coastal towns, Ravello is super peaceful and cozy.
Plus, if you’re into music, Ravello is famous for its summer music festivals where you can catch a concert with an amazing sea view.
And you’ve got fancy hotels in historic villas that offer luxury and a unique vibe.
Downsides:
- No direct beach access – you’ll have to head down to Amalfi for that.
- Prices can be pretty high, especially in the luxury villas.
- It’s way too quiet if you’re into nightlife.

4. Minori i Maiori
These smaller towns give you a more authentic experience and better prices. I was really impressed by the local restaurants and the friendly vibe when I visited.

5. Atrani
This little town is only a 10–minute walk from Amalfi, but the prices here are way cheaper!
Why stay in Atrani?
Atrani is perfect if you want to experience Amalfi’s attractions without the crowds.
In fact, prices for accommodation are about 40% lower compared to other spots on the coast. What’s more, the town has such a chill, cozy vibe with cute streets to wander.
Additionally, they have their own beach, which means it’s super peaceful and perfect for unwinding.
Downsides:
- Not as many tourist attractions as in Amalfi.
- Fewer restaurants and shops.
- The streets are really narrow, so it can be a bit tricky to get around.

6. Where to Stay on the Amalfi Coast: Agerola
A few words about Agerola, where I stayed:
My experience in Agerola
Agerola really stole my heart. The mountain views, fresh air, and that calm, authentic Italian vibe made me feel totally at home.
The accommodation here is way cheaper than on the Amalfi Coast, and Agerola is a perfect base for hiking the Path of the Gods.
If you’re after peace, quiet, and a real Italian experience away from the crowds, this place is perfect. However, just a heads-up, apart from the Path of the Gods, there aren’t too many things to do here.
Also, getting to the coast can be a bit of a challenge – those winding roads and a half-hour drive each way can be pretty exhausting, especially after a whole day of sightseeing.
Recommended Hotels in Agerola:

A cozy, family–run guesthouse where I had an awesome stay. I met some great people, and the vibe was super friendly. The owners serve tasty breakfasts and dinners from their own garden. Perfect for a comfy, affordable spot.

A family-run place with stunning views of the coast and mountains. Rooms are clean, and the breakfasts are really good. Great if you’re on a budget and have a car.

Helpful Tips
When’s the best time to book a hotel?
- If you’re going during peak season (June-August), it’s smart to book ahead – like 6 months in advance. It’s super busy, so spots fill up fast.
- Outside of peak season, like March or September, booking 2-3 months ahead is usually fine.
What to keep in mind when picking a hotel?
- Check if it’s close to the center or beach – some hotels are a bit far from the main spots, so you might end up walking more or having longer travel times.
- See how many stairs you’ll have to climb to get to the hotel. Some places have a lot (like hundreds!), which can be a pain if you’ve got heavy luggage.
- If you’re driving (which I wouldn’t recommend), make sure there’s parking. Some hotels include it in the price.
- Using public transport? Ask if they offer a shuttle from the port or bus stop –sometimes it’s even included!

When’s the best time to visit on a budget?
From my experience, the best times for a budget-friendly trip are:
- October and November – still pleasant weather, with prices 40-50% lower.
- March and April – the start of the season, but before prices skyrocket.
On the other hand, avoid August at all costs – prices are through the roof!
