Lake Como Italy Itinerary

Looking for the perfect Lake Como Italy itinerary? I’ve got you completely covered!

After spending an absolutely magical weekend exploring Bellagio and Varenna last July, I can honestly say this is one of those destinations that completely exceeded every expectation I had.

Yes, it was crowded (Italian summer always is), but every single moment was pure magic

From sipping morning cappuccino on Bellagio’s flower-lined waterfront to that unforgettable evening boat cruise when golden light danced across the water, Lake Como delivered that perfect Italian dolce vita experience I’d been dreaming about for years.

This itinerary covers all the must-sees plus those spontaneous moments that make a trip truly unforgettable. Fair warning: you’ll start planning your return trip before you even board the train back to Milan!

Day 1 Lake Como Italy Itinerary: Bellagio

Morning: The Moment That Took My Breath Away

Bellagio Waterfront – Where I Lost My Heart to Italy

Choose Bellagio as your home base (trust me on this one), and start your morning at the waterfront. When I first stepped onto this promenade, I literally stopped mid-stride and just stared

The flowers create these perfect Instagram frames around colorful houses that reflect in the pristine lake water, while dramatic mountains provide a backdrop that looks like someone painted it just for you.

It’s one of those places where every single photo looks like a postcard, but somehow no camera captures the real magic

I spent my first morning here with a cappuccino from a nearby café, just watching the lake come alive as boats started their daily routes. Pure bliss.

Pro tip: Visit around 8-9 AM when the light is soft and golden, and you have the place mostly to yourself. Worth every minute of that early wake-up call.

Late Morning: Discovering Hidden History

Basilica of St. James – More Than Just a Pretty Church

After falling in love with the waterfront, I wandered to the Basilica of St. James (Basilica di San Giacomo), and I’m so glad I did.

This isn’t just another pretty church – it’s a fascinating blend of 11th-century Romanesque architecture with later Baroque touches

Inside, I found myself captivated by Vincenzo Foppa’s incredible triptych and an imposing Crucifixion sculpture that commands attention.

But what really got me was the legend our guide shared about a mysterious sculpture discovered after a flood – apparently it now plays a starring role in the town’s Good Friday procession.

Salita Serbelloni – The Instagram Trap That’s Actually Worth It

Every travel blogger talks about Salita Serbelloni, and honestly, I thought it might be overhyped. I was completely wrong.

This picturesque alley offers those jawdropping views of Lake Como that make your heart skip a beat. Yes, it’s popular with photographers (including me – I took about fifty photos), but there’s a reason for that.

Between the boutiques and restaurants, I discovered some genuine local shops selling beautiful ceramics and handmade items.

The secret? Visit in the early evening when day tourists are having dinner – you’ll have those perfect shots almost to yourself.

Afternoon: Feast Mode Activated

Italian Lunch – Where I Learned What Real Risotto Tastes Like

After all that exploring (and photo-taking), I was ready for the meal I’d been anticipating all morning – authentic Italian lunch! Initially, I worried that all Bellagio restaurants would be tourist traps. How wrong I was!

The regional specialties here completely changed my perspective on Italian cuisine. The missoltini (salted, dried herrings) sounded weird but tasted incredible.

The risotto made with Arborio rice was so creamy I nearly cried. And that fresh persico fish from the lake? Pure perfection.

Local tip: Don’t be shy about asking your server for regional recommendations. Italians absolutely love sharing their food passion!

Giardini di Villa Melzi – My Afternoon Paradise

After that amazing lunch, I needed a peaceful stroll, and Villa Melzi’s gardens provided exactly that. These aren’t just gardens – they’re a masterpiece of landscape design right on Lake Como’s shores.

The white and blue pavilion became my favorite photo spot – that unique flooring combined with stunning lake views creates pure Instagram magic. But honestly?

I spent most of my time in the Oriental Garden, sitting by the lily pond with its charming bridge, just breathing in the tranquility

The museum inside surprised me too – it’s small but fascinating. Perfect way to spend a relaxed afternoon soaking up both nature and culture.

Evening: The Experience That Made Everything Perfect

Boat Cruise – The Best Money I Spent in Italy

Here’s what nobody tells you about Lake Como: if you only do one thing, make it renting a boat. Yes, 80 euros per hour initially made me wince, but the experience? Absolutely priceless.

I went with Lake by Boat Bellagio (no license required!), and it became the highlight of my entire Italian adventure.

Cruising across that mirrorperfect water with wind in my hair, seeing those magnificent villas from the water, passing ferry boats full of tourists while living my absolute best life – this is when you truly understand why people fall head-over-heels in love with Italy.

Insider tip: Book for late afternoon around 4-5 PM when the light starts turning that magical golden color. The photos will be spectacular, but the feeling? Unforgettable.

Dinner by the Lake – Romance Level: Maximum

I wrapped up my first day with dinner at one of Bellagio’s lakeside restaurants, and honestly, it felt like a scene from a romantic movie

Bellagio offers countless spots serving incredible food with views that’ll leave you speechless. I chose a table right by the water, watched the sun paint the mountains gold, and understood why couples come here for proposals.

Can you imagine anything more romantic than candlelit dinner with golden sunset reflecting off the lake? The answer was sitting right there in front of me.

Day 2 Lake Como Italy Itinerary: Varenna

Morning: The Ferry Ride That Started Everything

Discovering Varenna – The Town That Stole the Show

On day two, I hopped the ferry to Varenna, curious if it could possibly live up to its reputation as “the most beautiful town on Lake Como.” Spoiler alert: it’s even more stunning than people claim.

The 15-minute ferry ride from Bellagio runs every 30 minutes and costs just a few euros – easiest transportation ever. But that short journey offers incredible views of both towns from completely new perspectives.

I spent the entire ride on deck, camera in hand, watching Bellagio shrink into the distance while Varenna grew larger and more charming by the minute.

You buy tickets right before boarding – no stress, no advance planning needed.

Late Morning: History Comes Alive

Villa Monastero – The Convent That Became a Palace

Varenna’s Villa Monastero completely fascinated me, not just for its beauty but for its incredible story.

Learning that this gorgeous lakeside villa started as a Cistercian convent for women, then transformed into a luxury residence in the 17th century? Mind-blowing.

The original medieval layout remains intact, and that panoramic loggia offers some of the most spectacular Lake Como views I experienced all weekend. I spent ages just standing there, trying to absorb the magnitude of beauty surrounding me.

Inside the villa, those historical interiors transport you directly into bygone eras. Walking through those rooms felt like traveling through time – absolutely magical.

Afternoon: Food, Faith, and Flowers

Lunch Break – When Italian Gelato Changes Your Life

After exploring Villa Monastero, I treated myself to lunch at one of Varenna’s charming restaurants.

Like Bellagio, this town serves incredible Lombardy cuisine that’ll ruin you for Italian food anywhere else.

I chose a spot with lake views (obviously), and the meal was phenomenal. But the real revelation? The gelato afterward. I’m not exaggerating when I say it was life-changing.

Creamy, intense flavors that made me understand why Italians are so passionate about their gelato tradition.

Travel tip: Always save room for gelato. Always.

Chiesa di San Giorgio – Where Medieval Meets Magnificent

While wandering Varenna’s enchanting streets, I discovered the Church of San Giorgio (Chiesa di San Giorgio), and it became an unexpected highlight.

This 13thcentury church, recently restored to its medieval glory, showcases stunning Gothic architecture typical of Lombardy.

Standing in that main square, surrounded by centuries of history, I felt deeply connected to all the generations who’ve called this place home.

After visiting, I spent an hour just strolling Varenna’s narrow streets, getting deliberately lost in the magic of this lakeside gem.

Giardini di Villa Cipressi – Terraced Paradise

For my afternoon garden fix, I explored the Giardini di Villa Cipressi – terraced botanical gardens that cascade right down to the lake. Pure genius in landscape design

These gardens feature scenic pathways winding through amazing plants, with Lake Como views at every turn. I found a peaceful bench overlooking the water and spent quality time just soaking in the serene beauty

Insider secret: If you want to extend your Lake Como experience, Villa Cipressi operates as a hotel. Imagine waking up in these gardens every morning!

Evening: The Climb That Changed Everything

Castello di Vezio – Where I Conquered My Fear of Heights

Castello di Vezio has been watching over Varenna for over a thousand years, and I knew I had to make that climb.

Twenty minutes of steady uphill hiking later, slightly out of breath but determined, I reached the top. Holy. Amazing. Views

This historic castle offers the most spectacular Lake Como panoramas I experienced all weekend. The entire lake spreads below you like a perfect map, surrounded by mountains that seem to touch the sky.

I explored the fascinating dungeons, admired art exhibitions, and just stood there absorbing the natural beauty.

Summer special: Book sunset tickets on their website for complimentary wine and snacks. I discovered this too late but definitely doing it next time!

Return to Bellagio – Perfect Ending

After my incredible Varenna day, I ferried back to Bellagio for one final lakeside cocktail.

Sitting at that waterfront bar, drink in hand, watching the sun set over Lake Como, I started planning my return trip before I’d even finished my Aperol Spritz. That’s the Lake Como effect – it gets into your soul.

Essential Lake Como Travel Tips (From Someone Who’s Actually Been There)

Best Time to Visit – My Honest Take

Lake Como shines from May through September. I visited in July – gorgeous weather but definitely crowded.

If I were planning another trip, I’d choose May or September for equally beautiful weather with fewer tourists and that more relaxed Italian pace.

Summer offers perfect outdoor activity weather, but spring and autumn provide a more intimate Lake Como experience.

Getting There – The Route That Actually Works

The easiest way to get to Lake Como is by flying into Milan’s Malpensa Airport (MXP).

There are direct flights from major U.S. cities like New York, LA, and Chicago. Since MXP is a bit outside the city center, you’ll need to take the Malpensa Express train to Milano Centrale.

From there, catch a train to Como or Varenna. If you’re heading to Bellagio, just hop on a ferry from Varenna.

If you want to get to Bellagio, once you’re in Varenna, hop on a ferry to Bellagio. The whole trip takes about three hours, depending on where you’re staying.

From the US: Fly into Milan’s Malpensa Airport (MXP) – direct flights from major cities like New York, LA, and Chicago make it super convenient.

My tested route

  1. Malpensa Express train to Milano Centrale (50 minutes)
  2. Regional train to Varenna (1 hour)
  3. Ferry to Bellagio (15 minutes)

Total journey: About 3 hours, but those ferry views make every minute worthwhile.

Getting Around – What Actually Works Best

  • Ferries: Absolutely the best option. Scenic, convenient, and affordable for traveling between Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio. I used ferries exclusively and loved every minute.
  • Trains: Great for connecting Como, Varenna, and Lecco if you’re exploring beyond the main lake towns.
  • Walking: Many towns are best explored on foot through charming streets and lakeside promenades. Some of my favorite discoveries happened during random wandering.
  • Buses: Available but slow and crowded. Skip unless necessary.
  • Cars/Scooters: Offers flexibility but parking can be nightmarish in peak season.

Where to Eat – My Personal Tested Recommendations

Bellagio Favorites:

  • Trattoria San Giacomo: Where I had the best risotto of my entire life. Elegant atmosphere, traditional dishes executed perfectly. Reserve ahead!
  • Bellavita: Perfect for quick but delicious pizza and focaccia. That focaccia still appears in my dreams.
  • BstyleBellagio: Evening wine and small plates with incredible lake views. Pricey drinks but worth it for the atmosphere.

Varenna Winners:

  • Il Cavatappi: Cozy, elegant spot serving traditional dishes and local specialties. Felt like dining with an Italian family.
  • Ristorante La Vista: Name says it all – stunning lake views with fantastic food. Perfect for romantic dinners.
  • Ristorante Al Prato: Casual atmosphere where locals actually eat. Honest food, fair prices, authentic experience.

Lake Como Costs – Real Talk About Pricing

  • Ferry tickets: Bellagio to Varenna costs 4.60 euros one-way. If you’re hopping between multiple towns, buy a day pass for 23.30 euros.
  • Boat rental: Starts at 80 euros per hour – expensive but worth every cent for the experience.
  • Dining: Expect to pay more than other Italian regions, but the quality justifies the price.
  • Hotels: Luxury resorts are pricey, but great mid-range options exist. I stayed at Hotel Metropole Suisse in Bellagio – excellent value with stunning lake views.

Swimming in Lake Como – Is It Worth It?

Absolutely! The water is clean, clear, and refreshing. I swam at Spiaggia Pubblica di Bellagio – small pebbles instead of sand, but those views more than compensate.

Best swimming spots:

  • Abbadia Lariana Beach
  • Spiaggia Pubblica di Bellagio
  • Spiaggia di Onno

Just stick to designated areas and check weather conditions. Basic safety, amazing experience.

Accommodation Recommendation

I stayed at Hotel Metropole Suisse in Bellagio and was genuinely impressed with the value.

Beautiful lake views, comfortable rooms, and surprisingly reasonable prices for Lake Como standards.

Book early, especially for summer visits – availability gets limited quickly.
