So my husband and I decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary during a California road trip in July, and one of our stops was Korakia Pensione in Palm Springs.
This place looked absolutely dreamy on Instagram – like a legit Moroccan paradise dropped right into the California desert. White buildings, exotic plants, total boho vibes… Seemed perfect for a romantic road trip stop, you know?
After one night in their Sahara Suite, I’ve got the real tea for you. Spoiler: this place has incredible atmosphere and is totally unique, but… yeah, there’s always a “but.”
No sugar-coating here – I’m gonna tell you exactly how it went down!

History and Vibe: Like Stepping Into a Moroccan Dream
The Backstory is Actually Pretty Cool
Korakia Pensione isn’t your typical chain hotel – it’s got serious character! Some artist created this place because he wanted to recreate authentic Moroccan riad vibes right here in the desert. And honestly? He totally nailed the concept.
The whole property has two sections – Moroccan and Mediterranean. We stayed in the Moroccan part, which feels like an actual Moroccan village with white walls, arches, little courtyards, and fountains.

It really does feel like you’ve been transported somewhere else entirely. The Mediterranean section is across the street with its own pool and garden, but we didn’t get to check it out properly.
Every corner of the Moroccan section has its own personality, with furniture from all over the world. It’s definitely one-of-a-kind.
Moroccan Magic Everywhere You Look
The second we walked onto the property, I felt like I was in some artsy film. Plants everywhere, birds chirping, and when evening hits they light up hundreds of candles… It’s genuinely magical and has so much soul.

Location: Perfect Road Trip Pit Stop
Korakia’s got a solid location – close enough to downtown Palm Springs but tucked away in a quiet area.
It’s ideal for road tripping because you can easily hit up the main attractions, but when you come back to the pensione, you feel like you’re in your own little world.
Free parking is a huge win, especially when your car’s packed with road trip gear and you don’t want to deal with extra fees.
Our Sahara Suite: Lots of Space, Lots of Character
The Room Itself
We got this really spacious apartment setup with a separate bedroom, living room, and kitchen! Even for just one night, we were pretty impressed.
The living room had a fireplace (not super useful in July heat, but whatever), and there were actual vinyl records in the room – such a cool retro touch!
The bedroom opened onto this tiny terrace – cute but basically just symbolic. They also had board games, but honestly, who has time for that on a one-night stay?

Kitchen Situation – Meh
Having a kitchen sounds awesome for road trips, right? Well, this one was pretty dated and barely equipped. Not a huge deal for one night, but if you’re staying longer, it might get frustrating.
They brought coffee to our room, but it was just regular drip coffee, not from an espresso machine. If you’re a coffee snob, you might be disappointed.

Pool and Common Areas: Instagram Gold
That Pool Though
This pool is seriously gorgeous! Super stylish, surrounded by palm trees with these canopy seating areas. You really do feel like you’re at some fancy Marrakech resort. Perfect for photos and actually nice for chilling after driving all day.

Breakfast Scene
We ate breakfast on this shared terrace, which was actually really nice – communal vibes but still romantic. We went with huevos rancheros and they were legit good!
Breakfast was included in the resort fee, but if you wanted room service, that cost extra. We’re glad we chose the terrace – eating outside in such a beautiful setting was way more romantic anyway.

Evening Movie Nights
One of the coolest things about Korakia is they do old movie screenings by the pool! I didn’t check the schedule ahead of time (rookie mistake), so I don’t know if anything was happening that night. But the concept is awesome!
The Vibe at Night
When evening rolls around, they light up hundreds of candles all over the property. The atmosphere is incredible – warm, intimate, super romantic. Perfect for an anniversary and such a great way to end a road trip day!

Staff: Sweet But Missed Opportunities
The staff was genuinely nice and helpful. We got a welcome cocktail at check-in, which was a sweet touch after driving all day. Everyone knew the history of the place and loved sharing stories about it.
Only complaint? Zero acknowledgment of our anniversary. We totally mentioned it when booking, but there was no special treatment at all.
Maybe that’s nitpicky, but at a unique place like this and for what we paid, a little gesture would’ve been nice.
Maintenance Issues: Reality Check Time
Room Condition – Yikes
Okay, real talk – there were cobwebs in our room. Stains on the bathroom ceiling. And this sketchy–looking structure above the bathtub that looked like it might fall down (actually scary!). The tub-shower combo was super awkward to use.
This isn’t about the building being old or having character – this is straight-up neglect. For $500+ a night, everything should be spotless and safe!

Where’s the Line Between “Character” and “Gross”?
Look, I get that this place has artistic vibes and isn’t supposed to be sterile. But cobwebs aren’t part of the aesthetic – that’s just not taking care of your guests. And at these prices? Totally not okay.

Is $500+ Worth It?
We dropped over $500 for one night in the Sahara Suite. That’s serious cash, even for Palm Springs.
For that kind of money, you expect more than just cool vibes – you want top–notch maintenance, amazing service, and attention to detail.

Price Shopping Different Sites
I got curious after our trip and checked prices on different booking sites.
On Booking.com, the Sahara Suite runs $450-600 per night depending on season, and Agoda had similar rates, sometimes with tiny promotions. No matter where you book, it’s premium pricing year-round.
Sometimes Agoda has packages with extra perks, but the base price is still steep. Worth checking both sites since you might save $30-50 per night.
The resort fee was $67.62 per night – that’s a lot! It covered breakfast, WiFi, and probably other stuff, but it’s still annoying when the base room rate is already high.

Worth the Detour?
As a One-Night Stop
If you’re road tripping through California and want something totally unique for one night, Korakia could be interesting. It’s definitely not your standard hotel – it’s a whole experience.
But for this money, you gotta be ready for things not being perfect. And that’s frustrating when you’re paying premium prices.

Uniqueness vs Reality
What Makes Korakia Pensione Special
This place has something you literally can’t find at any chain hotel. The atmosphere, history, one-of-a-kind design – it really is like traveling to another world.
If you want something completely unique for your road trip, Korakia might be perfect.
But at What Cost?
Here’s the thing – for $500+ per night, you can find places with both amazing atmosphere AND high quality. In lots of other spots.

Practical Stuff
Cool Perks
Nice surprise – they offer free bike rentals! Great way to explore Palm Springs without dealing with downtown parking and traffic.
Pack This:
- Camera (seriously photogenic place!)
- Swimsuit (that pool’s worth it)
- Your own good coffee if you’re picky
- Fat wallet and patience for imperfections
Bottom Line
For this much money? Honestly, I think there are better options out there. The vibe is amazing, but maintenance issues at these prices are just not acceptable.
Would I Go Back?
Nope, not for this price. If it cost half as much, maybe I’d overlook the problems. But for $500+ per night, I expect everything to be on point, not making excuses.
Final Thoughts
Korakia Pensione has serious soul and character – it’s a truly unique experience. But for what they’re charging, it’s just not worth it.

My Rating: 6/10
Huge points for incredible atmosphere and character. Big deduction for maintenance problems at these prices. You can definitely do better elsewhere for this money.

Quick Summary
Korakia Pensione transports you to a Moroccan riad right in Palm Springs. If you want something totally unique and non-standard, you’ll love the vibe.
BUT – for $500+ per night (Booking.com or Agoda, doesn’t matter), cleanliness and maintenance issues are just not acceptable.
This place has amazing potential but needs serious investment to justify premium pricing.
Perfect for: Artsy, boho-loving travelers with big budgets and patience for imperfections. If you expect perfection for your money – look elsewhere.
My recommendation? At half the price – absolutely. Current price – nope, unless you’re totally obsessed with this specific vibe and ready to compromise.
