1. Curry Laksa: One of the Best Kuala Lumpur Food Delights

Curry laksa unquestionably secures the top spot on our list of exceptional Kuala Lumpur food. Undoubtedly, it stands as the most exceptional dish we’ve had the pleasure of experiencing, not just in Kuala Lumpur, but across the entirety of Malaysia. This dish is an extraordinarily aromatic, spicy soup crafted from a harmonious blend of red chili paste and coconut milk. Typically served with noodles (either yellow or vermicelli) and accompanied by additions such as shrimp, tofu, calamari, fish pieces, mung bean sprouts, or dried shrimp, it represents a phenomenal culinary creation that encapsulates everything we cherish about Kuala Lumpur food and Asian cuisine. You simply must try it! For the ultimate curry laksa experience in Kuala Lumpur, head to Madras Lane or Limapulo Baba Can Cook.

3. Beef Noodles: Among the Must-Try Kuala Lumpur Food

No visit to the city would be complete without savoring Kuala Lumpur food such as beef noodles, a delightful pasta featuring minced beef and pork. The meat is pre-cooked with garlic and soybean paste, imparting a distinctive taste and color. This dish is offered in both the traditional, or ‘dry,’ version and as a soup with slices and meatballs of beef. We had the pleasure of trying both variants, and each was exceptionally tasty. For the best beef noodles in KL, Soong Kee is the recommended choice.

4. Hokkien Mee

Hokkien Mee, a simple yet incredibly tasty Kuala Lumpur food dish, originated in the 1920s and was crafted by a Chinese immigrant from Fujian. The main ingredients may vary by region, and in Kuala Lumpur, it is typically served with soy sauce alongside pieces of chicken, pork, or squid. However, in the northern regions of the country, such as Penang, and in Singapore, Hokkien Mee is commonly made with shrimp. Regardless of the version you choose, it always delights the taste buds 😉 When in KL, for a delightful serving of Hokkien Mee, consider visiting Kim Lian Kee or Ming Hoe.

5. Hainan Chicken Rice: An Iconic Dish in Kuala Lumpur’s Food Scene

We must confess that we were initially skeptical about Hainan Chicken Rice, a renowned Kuala Lumpur food. However, one bite of the perfectly velvety and juicy chicken was sufficient to completely change our minds. As the name suggests, this dish originated from Chinese immigrants hailing from Hainan Province. The chicken is delicately steamed and accompanied by aromatic rice soaked in broth, fresh cucumber, and a touch of soy sauce. A flagship dish of Malaysia that is a must-try. In KL, the best rendition can be savored at Nasi Ayam Hainan Chee Meng or Seng Kee.

Char Kway Teow is another Malaysian national dish that is a must-try among the diverse array of Kuala Lumpur food offerings. This dish features fried rice noodles tossed in soy sauce, accompanied by shrimps, egg, Chinese sausage, bean sprouts, and chives. The best Char Kway Teow in the entire Kuala Lumpur (as we had the opportunity to discover) can be enjoyed at Penang Famous Fried Kway Tiao & Prawn Mee in the basement of the Lot 10 shopping center. 8. Nasi Lemak: A Culinary Icon and the Most Popular Kuala Lumpur Food

Nasi Lemak is a dish that probably needs no introduction, being one of the most popular and simplest Malaysian specialties enjoyed from morning to evening. In its most basic form, Nasi Lemak consists of rice cooked with coconut milk and pandan leaves, complemented by a hard-boiled egg, deep-fried anchovies, and cucumber slices. The dish is distinguished by its characteristic spiciness derived from sambal sauce. In a more elaborate version, it comes as a set with fried chicken (known as ayam goreng), fish, or beef stewed in coconut milk with various spices like chili or turmeric (known as rendang). According to locals, the best Nasi Lemak can be savored at Village Park Restaurant.

9. Ais Kacang

Ais Kacang stands out as one of the most uniquely delightful desserts we’ve encountered in all our travels. It features a ‘mountain’ of shaved ice adorned with distinctive additions such as red beans, sweet corn, grass jelly, sea coconut, various fruits, raisins, or peanuts. Occasionally, this refreshing dessert is accompanied by a scoop of ice cream, perfect for the Malaysian heat. Our first experience with ais kacang was at Oriental Dessert in Lot 10, but, in fact, this treat is available everywhere. Don’t miss the opportunity to give it a try!

10. Durian Ice Cream

The last, but equally intriguing, item on our list is durian-flavored ice cream, featuring the taste of the king among fruits. Durian, beloved by the inhabitants of Southeast Asia and often disliked by others due to its distinctive smell and taste, surprises in the form of ice cream. Contrary to popular belief, durian ice cream offers a surprisingly delightful experience, with a taste reminiscent of caramelized onion, a flavor we personally enjoy. We remain puzzled as to why the durian chips we brought home did not captivate our friends and family. For the best durian ice cream, head to Lot 10 and visit the Durian Lagenda.
