Where to stay in Kuala Lumpur?

In Kuala Lumpur, a diverse range of hotels and accommodations awaits, catering to various budgets (with the most budget-friendly options found in Chinatown). Opting for a spectacular city view and an impressive rooftop pool, my choice was the KL Platinum Suite 42 By SNC—a decision that exceeded expectations!

This spacious, functional, and modern apartment came at a reasonable rate of 70 euros per night, offering a breathtaking panorama of the Petronas Towers just under a kilometer away. Guests enjoyed exclusive access to a 51st-floor infinity pool and a fitness center until late evening. Discover the perfect stay with stunning city views and top-notch amenities.

The only drawback was the absence of included breakfast (though available for order in the on-site restaurant, exceeding my daily budget). If a day in doesn’t sound bad, consider ordering through the Foodpanda app, ensuring convenient and cost-effective doorstep delivery.

Kuala Lumpur Itinerary: What to do & where to eat?

Day 1 of Kuala Lumpur Itinerary

Petronas Towers & Suria KLCC

Enhance your Kuala Lumpur visit by planning at least 2 days (I opted for 3 nights, an ideal duration). Commence your 2-day exploration with a leisurely stroll to Kuala Lumpur’s premier attraction—the iconic Petronas Towers and the expansive Suria KLCC, home to Malaysia’s largest gallery.

Initially skeptical, I discovered firsthand that Malaysians’ preferred pastime isn’t football but rather shopping, given Kuala Lumpur’s extreme heat and occasional rain. Seek refuge in air-conditioned malls to escape the city’s weather.

Apart from serving as a prominent landmark, the Petronas Towers are spectacularly illuminated at night. Internally, they resemble a typical business center but are a must-see, being the most recognizable landmark in the city and the entire country.

Once the tallest globally, the Petronas Towers now rank in the top thirty. However, they remain a must-visit. In good weather, explore the Sky Bridge’s observation deck connecting both towers (consider purchasing tickets online in advance).

Nearby Suria KLCC, the notable Aquaria KLCC boasts nearly 250 animal species, featuring a captivating glass tunnel with overhead swimming sharks (details on the website). Don’t miss the well-maintained urban park frequented by both tourists and locals, providing a leisurely retreat.

Consider checking the website for more information on ticket prices, attractions, and helpful tips for your Kuala Lumpur adventure.

Pavilion KL & Pho Vietz | Kuala Lumpur Itinerary

If you find yourself hungry, much like the locals in Malaysia, consider indulging in a delightful meal at the… shopping center. I highly recommend experiencing an authentic Vietnamese feast at the renowned Pho Vietz restaurant, conveniently located in the popular Pavilion shopping center. Explore a diverse menu featuring classic Vietnamese culinary treasures, including spring rolls with shrimp, savory meat dumplings, and a selection of pho soups.

For a truly satisfying experience, I suggest trying the pho soup with tender beef slices and succulent shrimp, combined with vermicelli noodles, fish sauce, and a generous amount of fresh cilantro (because, let’s be honest, you can never have too much cilantro! ;)). Rest assured that every dish not only looks appetizing but also delivers an exceptional taste experience.

Kuala Lumpur Bird Park

After enjoying a delicious lunch, make your way to the renowned Kuala Lumpur Bird Park, nestled within the expansive botanical gardens and reputedly the largest in all of Asia. Considering its distance from Pavilion, incorporating Grab for a taxi service is recommended in your Kuala Lumpur itinerary, ensuring both time efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Kuala Lumpur Bird Park stands as a highly sought-after tourist attraction, welcoming an average of 200,000 visitors each year. Housing over 3,000 birds representing nearly 200 species, with 90% originating from Malaysia, the park offers glimpses of pink flamingos, vibrant parrots, and the hornbill – Malaysia’s national bird currently facing the threat of extinction.

While most of the birds freely explore the park’s pathways, a few are showcased in cages. Prepare for delightful surprises as you navigate through unyielding flocks of flamingos 😉 Visitors have the opportunity to feed the birds with provided grains, and with a stroke of luck, witness scheduled feeding times and other captivating attractions.

The park is thoughtfully segmented into thematic sections, with the waterfalladorned area being a personal favorite.

Useful information

Kuala Lumpur Bird Park operates daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Admission for adults is priced at 85 ringgits. Plan a minimum of two hours for an immersive visit. Explore further details on the official website.

Merchant’s Lane | Kuala Lumpur Itinerary

After exploring the park, treat yourself to indulgent desserts and aromatic coffee at Merchant’s Lane, a charming establishment located near Chinatown. It’s remarkable that this venue, once a Chinese brothel, now delights patrons with delectable dishes.

I must confess, the unique decor and intimate ambiance of this locale immediately charmed me. As I perused the menu, I was convinced that I wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon. Who could resist a dessert with such an intriguing name as “better than sex“?

Indeed, two delightful specialties from the establishment graced my table in succession – pandan roti with melted cheese, and ice cream with the enticing flavor of kaya toast (a popular Singaporean breakfast featuring coconut-egg jam), adorned with strawberries and sweet syrup. Additionally, fried brioche-style balls with lemon ice cream and kaya sauce added to the culinary experience.

Doesn’t the description sound irresistibly tempting? Trust me, these are among the finest desserts I’ve savored in all of Malaysia. Beyond the sweet offerings, you’ll find an array of savory dishes available throughout the day. Make it a point to visit this culinary haven!

Chinatown | Kuala Lumpur Itinerary

When planning a trip to Kuala Lumpur in 2 days, Chinatown is a must-visit locale that adds vibrancy and cultural essence to your Kuala Lumpur itinerary. The most iconic street in this district is Jalan Petaling, adorned with red lanterns, creating a particularly enchanting atmosphere, especially at night.

Similar to any authentic Chinese enclave, Chinatown boasts a plethora of budget-friendly restaurants and street vendors offering delectable specialties such as pork noodles and wonton soup. There are numerous hostels catering to the average backpacker’s budget, and a bustling market with stalls featuring replicas of renowned brands (curiously intriguing, considering who purchases them?). Enthusiasts of street food and economical shopping are sure to find delight here. Remember to hone your bargaining skills 😉

While in Chinatown, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the Sri Mahamariamman Hindu temple, one of the city’s most significant, as well as two Taoist temples – Guan Di and Sin Sze Si Ya (the oldest of its kind in Kuala Lumpur).

Symphony Lake Water Show | Kuala Lumpur Itinerary

After exploring the vibrant Chinese district, elevate your day with a visit to the acclaimed Symphony Lake Water Show—a mesmerizing blend of music and lights. This captivating show occurs daily at 7:30 PM, 8:30 PM, and 9:30 PM in front of the Suria KLCC shopping center. The twenty-minute performance features perfectly synchronized music accompanying the enchanting “dance” of colorful fountain streams on the lake. Don’t miss this spectacular attraction during your Kuala Lumpur visit!

Day 2 of Kuala Lumpur Itinerary

Enhance your Kuala Lumpur itinerary on the second day with a visit to the sophisticated VCR Café Kuala Lumpur for breakfast. VCR Café has gained popularity in the city, renowned for its elaborate breakfasts and brunches, earning the distinguished TripAdvisor badge – ‘Traveler’s Choice’. This culinary hotspot caters to both vegetarians and meat enthusiasts, ensuring a delightful dining experience.

Situated in the historic Pudu district, within a building that once housed guards from a nearby prison, VCR Café offers a unique setting. Indulge in the establishment’s specialty, the homemade chipolata sausage with minced lamb, baked tomato, bacon, and egg-in-a-hole toast. Alternatively, opt for the vegetarian toast featuring feta, egg, and avocado puree. Don’t miss the chance to savor these culinary delights during your visit to Kuala Lumpur.

Thean Hou Temple | Kuala Lumpur Itinerary

Following your breakfast, embark on a visit to Thean Hou Temple. Renowned as the largest Chinese sacred structure in the city, this temple is dedicated to the goddess of the sea.

Beyond its impressive architecture, what truly enchants is the vast garden adorned with sculptures inspired by Chinese mythology, offering breathtaking views of the city from Robson Hill. Explore this cultural gem, but be aware that the ground-floor section with souvenirs and devotional items may not appeal to everyone’s taste.

An intriguing detail to note is that the first floor of the temple houses a versatile event hall, available for various celebrations, including Chinese weddings.

Beyond the ornate prayer hall featuring the goddess’s image, there’s a practical room with a waiting area equipped with chairs, a screen, and a queue number dispenser.

It’s worth mentioning that no Chinese wedding is complete without a commemorative photo taken against a specially prepared photo backdrop. Explore this unique facet of Thean Hou Temple as part of your Kuala Lumpur journey.

Useful information

The temple welcomes visitors every day from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, offering free admission. To reach the temple conveniently, especially in the absence of nearby public transportation, consider taking a taxi, with the Grab app as a recommended option. Explore the temple’s offerings, including a small restaurant on the ground floor serving affordable Chinese and vegetarian dishes.

Lot 10 Hutong Food Court | Kuala Lumpur Itinerary

On the first day of your 2-day exploration of Kuala Lumpur, I highly recommend a visit to a culinary treasure nestled in the underground of Lot 10 shopping centerHutong Food Court. Celebrated for its homage to Malaysian cuisine and the art of local food, this gastronomic haven boasts over 30 stalls, each reputed to offer the best dishes in the entire country, with recipes passed down through generations.

Indulge in the following delectable recommendations: wonton pork noodles from Ho Weng Kee, beef noodles from Soong Kee (both versions), char kway teow from Penang Famous Fried Kway Tiao & Prawn Mee, and ais kacang from Oriental Dessert. Among these, ais kacang surprisingly became one of my favorite Asian desserts (who would have thought that beans with ice could taste so good?). Explore the culinary delights at Hutong Food Court, making it a highlight of your Kuala Lumpur journey.

Wrap up your 2-day exploration of Kuala Lumpur with a visit to the iconic observation deck at Menara – one of the world’s tallest television towers standing at 421 meters, providing panoramic views of the entire city.

Besides the observation deck, the tower’s summit (282 meters above sea level) houses the SkyBox, a contemporary revolving restaurant, and on the ground floor, discover the Blue Coral Aquarium, KL Tower Mini Zoo, and a Formula 1 simulator.
